Wildland fire in Onchiota
ONCHIOTA — A wildland fire here burned for several hours Sunday, according to members of the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department.
The fire occurred on Eskerview Road, a private road off of Meenagha Mountain Road, which is also private, in Onchiota in the town of Franklin.
The Enterprise arrived on the scene at approximately 6:30 p.m. and was unable to enter Eskerview Road; a member of the Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department said it was a safety concern. The fire appeared to be extinguished, and no smoke was visible from Meenagha Road. State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers were grabbing chainsaws, preparing to clear trees.
Fire departments from Saranac Lake, Bloomingdale, Paul Smiths-Gabriels, Duane and Owls Head-Mountain View responded to the fire. Franklin County Emergency Services responded, too.
