APA to review campgrounds, UMPs, but no Boreas

RAY BROOK — The state Adirondack Park Agency Board of Commissioners will take on a full agenda at its regular monthly meeting this week, but an eagerly awaited decision on classifying the state’s new Boreas Ponds property is not on the list.

Board committee meetings begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at agency headquarters in Ray Brook, continuing at 9 a.m. Friday. The full board will convene at 11:15 a.m. Friday.

The State Land Committee is the first to meet Thursday and will take up the entire morning. The board will vote on having public comments at the same time as the state Department of Environmental Conservation on numerous unit management plans. The committee will discuss UMPs for campgrounds on Piseco Lake, Caroga Lake and Buck Pond in Onchiota. The Blue Mountain Wild Forest UMP will also be discussed, as will the Siamese Ponds Wilderness and Jessup River Wild Forest UMPs.

At noon, the agency will hold its annual tree-planting ceremony, this year in honor of Peter van de Water. Van de Water was a former chair of Citizens to Save the Adirondack Park, and was an avid outdoorsman, according to his obituary. Van de Water died in 2014 at the age of 77.

After lunch, the Local Government Services Committee will meet, followed by the Park Policy and Planning and Legal Affairs committees.

On Friday, the Regulatory Programs Committee will review the general permit that allows regional and municipal utility companies to replace utility poles in wetlands. The committee may vote to send this out for public comment.

The Economic Affairs Committee will hear about a business in Brant Lake that is attracting bicyclists to the area. The owner of the business will give a presentation on the economic impact it is having.
