Fire destroyed a house in Vermontville Saturday night.

The Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 661 Cold Brook Road at 9:53 p.m. with three trucks and 13 members.

Bloomingdale fire Chief Tim Woodruff said the fire had already consumed the double-wide trailer home by the time his department’s members arrived.

“There were only two walls standing when our guys first got there,” he said.

Firefighters from Saranac Lake, Paul Smiths-Gabriels and Lake Placid also responded to the scene.

Woodruff said no one was home at the time the fire broke out; the residents had left earlier in the evening, he said. Franklin County tax records indicate the property is owned by L.J.K. Drake of Ithaca.

Firefighters were on scene until 2:27 a.m. Sunday.

Pictures taken Sunday morning show a pile of fire debris, including twisted and charred metal roofing, where the house once stood. A nearby two-car garage is still standing, though its siding appears melted from the heat of the blaze.

Woodruff said the cause of the fire is under investigation by a Franklin County Cause and Origin team.

The Saranac Volunteer Fire Department stood by at Bloomingdale’s fire station during the call. The Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department stood by at the Paul Smiths-Gabriels station.
